Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project in Uganda.

Description:
In 2013-2014, JICA conducted the Preparatory Survey for the Greater Kampala Roads Improvement Project. Based on the survey findings, the Government of Uganda, through the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), initiated the detailed design and tender assistance for the Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project. The objective was to facilitate timely preparation of the detailed design for the anticipated loan from JICA to finance the construction of the Project.

Scope of Work: Detailed engineering design, tender assistance for Lot 2, construction supervision for Lot 1 and Lot 2, and technology transfer.

    Description:
    The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance transportation efficiency in the critical Mombasa area, a key gateway to East Africa. It encompasses basic and detailed designs for a cable-stayed bridge spanning 2,750 meters, linking Mombasa Island with the South Mainland (Likoni area) including provisions for connecting to the Mombasa Southern Bypass.

    Scope of Work: Feasibility study review, conducting surveys necessary for design works: Natural condition survey for seismic and wind, Topographic and Geotechnical survey, Traffic volume/demand survey, Utility survey, Basic Design and Detailed Design of Main Bridge (Steel Cable-Stayed Bridge), Approach Roads, and O&M facilities, Special analysis of cable-stayed bridge, Environmental and social considerations to supplement ESMP and support the revision of RAP

    Description:
    The Study on Road Safety in the East Africa Community commissioned by the EAC Secretariat and funded by JICA Tanzania Office (December 2020) was recently completed, and priorities and a draft action plan were proposed. The Study’s objective was to prepare EAC Regional Guidelines and Financing Strategies for the RSS in the Tripartite through data analysis on the situation of RSS issues of the Partner States including RSS policies and systems.

    Scope of Work: Literature review, stakeholder analysis, collection of traffic safety data, conducting questionnaire survey, interviews with key stakeholders, drafting of EAC regional guidelines on roadside service stations in tripartite, development of financing strategies and organising meetings and workshops.

    Description:
    The project aimed to explore the feasibility of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), address current traffic issues, and propose traffic improvement measures. It also formulated a strategy to promote Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) in Mombasa Central Business District (CBD), focusing on enhancing NMT and Passenger Service Vehicles (PSVs).

    Scope of Work: Data collection, entry, and analysis which led to the formulation of proposed recommendations to address the identified transportation challenges, coordination and organizing Workshops, technical transfer to county staff on use of ITS

    Description:
    The project involved the rehabilitation of the deteriorated bituminous road by widening the carriageway to 6 meters and elevating it to DS4 design standards. This included a 7-meter-wide carriageway with 1.5-meter paved shoulders. The upgrade involved improving the horizontal and vertical alignment, constructing new pavement layers, and installing cross drainage structures such as pipe and box culverts and providing road furniture.

    Scope of Work: Overall project management and administration, FIDIC Contract Administration, claims management, contract document review, compliance oversight, inspection and approval of construction activities, payment certification, and leading the site supervision team.

    Description:
    The Mombasa SEZ Master Plan outlines crucial Phase 1 infrastructures such as port, power supply, water supply, drainage, and roads. Collaborating with the grant aid initiative, "the Project for Infrastructure Development in Mombasa SEZ," the project targets three sub-projects: Road, Port, and Electricity. This consultation service focuses on the Road Sub-project, managing a 4,600m, 4-lane access road and a 2,800m ramp.

    Scope of Work: Tender assistance for document review and finalization, construction supervision covering adequacy assessment, method of work approvals, drawing reviews, tests supervision, construction inspection, design modification, and Taking-Over Certificate issuance, assistance in monitoring Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and facilitation of technology transfer through seminars, workshops, and on-the-job training (OJT).
