  • Client: JST for Project for Global Low-carbon Society

    Period: 2020-2021

    Description:
The project aimed to help developing countries shift to low-carbon societies. Japan, under "Actions for Cool Earth 2.0 (ACE 2.0)" at COP21 in 2015, pledged about 1.3 trillion yen by 2020 for climate change efforts. JICA has since collaborated with 1,000+ Japanese firms to research climate change solutions, focusing on identifying needs and technological opportunities in developing countries.

    Scope of Work:
Phase 1 involved researching and analysing CO2 emission composition and target countries' cooperation towards low-carbon transition. Investigations were conducted into issues, stakeholders, and needs in renewable energy, energy-saving industries, low-carbon urban transportation/logistics systems, and forest conservation. In Phase 2, hypothesis testing was carried out to assess the feasibility of market entry for selected candidates in target countries.

    Period: 2020 to Date

    Description:
The Kenyan government, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to enhance the Port and Road Infrastructure of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (MSEZ). Due to the displacement of Project Affected Persons (PAPs) resulting from the proposed port and road project, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is planning to resettle these individuals within the MSEZ. This resettlement initiative aligns with JICA's safeguards policy. Specifically categorized as package zero, this project focuses on the design of the infrastructure for the resettlement sites.

    Scope of Work:
Conducting the detailed design and construction supervision of infrastructure for the resettlement sites.

    Period: 2020 to Date

    Description:
The Government of Kenya secured a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to fund the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Development Project. The project includes three Sub-projects: Port, Road, and Electricity. The project pertained to the electricity sub project encompassing several key aspects including conducting the Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA).

    Scope of Work:
Performing the Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)

  • Client: JICA

    Period: 2020 to Date

    Description:
The objective of the survey was to conduct a feasibility study for three essential infrastructure components aimed at facilitating the early implementation of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The study aimed to assess the viability of port facility, power supply and water supply components to ensure the successful establishment of the Dongo Kundu SEZ. The assignment also included the assessment of ESIA.

    Scope of Work:
Feasibility study of the port, power and water supply components.

    Period: 2020 to Date

    Description:
Green hydrogen has become a leading contender in the global quest for sustainable energy solutions. Kenya, endowed with substantial renewable energy potential, is positioned as a key player in green hydrogen production.

    Scope of Work:
Koei Africa actively engaged in a feasibility study with the following goals: to assess the competitiveness of green hydrogen production in Kenya; to develop pilot proposals for green hydrogen production and its diverse utilization sectors, and to compile policy recommendations crucial for realizing the feasibility of green hydrogen initiatives in the country.

  • Client: JICA

    Period: 2020 to Date

    Description:
The objective of the risk assessment was to identify current and future climate change-induced hazards affecting the Providence 1 (P-1) and Providence 2 (P-2) landfills, both existing coastal waste management systems on Mahé island in the Republic of Seychelles. The findings from this assessment aimed to provide crucial insights for identifying alternatives in subsequent technological, socioeconomic, and financing evaluations. Close collaboration occurred with the World Bank's Climate Change team conducting a parallel study on Coastal Risk Management and the EU Team working on the Seychelles Solid Waste Master Plan.

    Scope of Work:
KAF conducted a vulnerability assessment by analysing existing data and documents, considering various climate scenarios and potential stressors like future land development and increased waste production. Our recommendations, stemming from the risk assessment, included potential adaptation measures to mitigate human and environmental exposure to contaminants of concern.
