On-the-Job Training (OJT) Program: Designing Countermeasures for Earthquake-triggered Landslides

28th July to 10th August 2024. | JAPAN.

Our Technical Expert, Harrison Ochieng, participated in an OJT program organized by Nippon Koei's Geohazards Department in Japan. The training held in the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, focused on designing countermeasures for earthquake-induced landslides.

The key training activities included:

  • Fieldwork: Visits to two landslide sites affected by recent earthquakes, with hands-on training in monitoring equipment such as borehole extensometers and inclinometers.
  • Core Observation: Analysis of drilled borehole cores to identify landslide slip surfaces
  • Stability Modeling: Application of theories, such as Modified Fellenius, for landslide stability analysis and countermeasure design.

The program aimed to enhance technical skills in landslide mitigation, foster collaboration between KAF and NK Geohazards Department, and explore opportunities for joint projects in Africa. This initiative reflects KAF's commitment to knowledge exchange and innovation in geohazard management.
